In Vitro Diagnostics
Advancing Healthcare Through Microfluidic Innovation
In Vitro Diagnostics (IVD) play a central role in modern healthcare. These diagnostic tests, performed on biological samples such as blood, swab specimen, tissue, or urine, enable clinicians to detect disease, guide treatment decisions, and monitor patient health.
At thinXXS, In Vitro Diagnostics are not just an application area—they are at the core of what we do. Through advanced microfluidic engineering and scalable manufacturing, we enable high‑performance IVD devices.

What Are In Vitro Diagnostics (IVD)?
In Vitro Diagnostics refer to tests performed outside the human body (“in vitro”) to evaluate health conditions, identify diseases, or assess therapy treatments. These tests are typically carried out using automated devices that analyze samples collected from patients.

Where In Vitro Diagnostic Tests Are Performed
A distinction is usually made between two main types of IVD tests: laboratory-based tests and point-of-care tests.
Traditionally, IVD testing has taken place in laboratories, requiring specialized instrumentation and trained personnel. This can still be required for more complex tests and tests that detect parameters which – if present - pose a high risk to both individual and public health.
Examples of laboratory based IVD applications include e.g. Complex Molecular Assays and Next‑Generation Sequencing (NGS)
However, thanks to advances in microfluidics, assay miniaturization, and integration, IVD tests are moving toward the doctor’s office or right into the patient's home with at‑home diagnostic test kits and connected medical devices. This shift is reshaping how IVD devices are designed, manufactured, and scaled.
The Impact of IVD Diagnostics on Healthcare
IVD tests play a central role in daily medical practice. Today, the majority of clinical decisions are based on test results
POC tests have further expanded the benefits of IVD tests. By delivering results directly at or near the patient, they enable faster time‑to‑treatment in emergency situations and improved access to diagnostics in resource‑limited settings.
Some applications, such as personalized and precision medicine, in which treatment decisions are tailored to individual biological characteristics, would be hard to imagine without IVD.
